I will stay with the story from The Sheffield Daily Telegraph even if my chap is not counted amongst the "brave fellows". He was already on his way to South Africa by the 5th October with the clever blokes in the Veterinary Department.
Looking for Salutries, Salootries and Veterinary Duffadars.
I collect primarily QSAs to Indian Recipients.

I was trying to work out when the 11th Hussars landed in SA and when they arrived in Ladysmith

A few snippets from The Times:

6th July 1899

28th July 1899

11th August (2 entries)

31st October

7th February 1900

Thank you to both Davids for an interesting record of troop movements. Deploying the army in Victoria's Empire was evidently a complex task!

The following two examples show that this list is incomplete:

Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State (2869 Shg. Sth. P. Rawsthorne, 11th Hussars)

Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, Belfast (2992 Pte. T. Stannard, 11th Hussars)

The 11th Hussars roll is in WO100/116.

Rawsthorne's QSA is listed on WO100/234p72 and Stannard's on WO100/234p73.

The three roll page headers below contain medals named to the 11th Hussars but this would not be expected given where the pages were indexed in WO100 and how the header is written.

The roll for the 11th Hussars in WO100/116 makes the naming of the medals easier to determine:

The QSA and KSA to Major W R Codrington, 11th Hussars attached ILH, make for interesting research. The medals are named:

Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Relief of Mafeking, Defence of Ladysmith, Orange Free State, Transvaal (Bt: Major. W. R. Codrington, 11/Hrs:);
King’s South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps (Major. W. R. Codrington. 11/Hrs.);

All of his listings are on the ILH rolls but Woolwich were able to name both medals to the 11th Hussars.

A copy of his ILH supplementary QSA roll also appears in the 11th Hussars's role at WO100/116p305.

These example suggest there must have been a list of units and names that transcended the medal rolls we see and that guided those naming the medals to deviate from the rolls. An earlier post in this thread provides one example of this information.
