Hi all.
I've been researching my Grandfather's elder brother through Findmypast etc .
It threw up an interesting military record for him . His record shows
William Robert Pickering born in Pocklington attests on 3/10/91
in the 11th Hussars Regt No 3326

Military History Sheet ( attached) says
Home 1/10/91 to 10/5/92
S Africa 11/5/92 to 20/10/92
India 24/10/92 to 23/3/99
AR 28/3/99 to 27/3/99
Home 18/1/00 to 24/2/00
S Africa 25/2/00 to 23/2/03
At Reserve 24/2/03 to 30/9/03
Campaigns Punjab Frontier 1897-98
South Africa 1899-1901-2

Medals Queens SA Medal, Clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State,Transvaal
Kings SA Medal, Clasps SA 1901-2
India Medal 1895 with clasp ''Punjab Frontier'' 1897-8
I've ploughed through WO100/116 which is the 11th Hussars medal roll but can't find him .
There is no mention of him being transferred but according to the reading I've done, the 11th were not in India at the time of the 1895 Medal and the Punjab Frontier Clasp.
Can anyone shed any light on it please?
Thanks

FmP also record that he was attached to the Remounts in South Africa, seems he was more of a horseman than a soldier.

In addition, WO100/84 does confirm the India medal and clasp for his service, with his regiment, actually on campaign, on the Punjab Frontier.

A similar query came up on this site some time ago. According to "A History of the British Cavalry, 1816-1919" by The Marquess of Anglesea F.S.A., (ISBN 0 436 27321 7), 11th H were in India and listed for overseas service - however an outbreak of glanders put the regiment in quarantine for four months and prevented deployment to South Africa. However, a dismounted detachment did arrive in SA and were besieged in Ladysmith. Later another draft was sent out for the 8th H and some of them were volunteers for the SAC. Your man probably was part of the second draft - or perhaps another. Remounts were vital to the campaign.

IL.

Hi thanks to one and all for your help.
Would I be correct in say thay your McElhinney and my Pickering probably knew each other ?

Just to confuse me further I found this on Ancestry

On clicking the W H Pickering button it appears it is 3326 W R Pickering..is the York and Lancs connection a mistake by Ancestry's transcribers?

As an aside could I ask if it's possible to find information for 11th Hussars between the Boer and First World War?
The family knowledge said that my own Grandfather Wilfred Herbert Pickering born 1881 Bishop Wilton, Pocklington was a regular soldier before WW1, and also a Cherrypicker . He was in uniform in October 1914 with the Royal Field Artillery..No 49857, does that suggest he was on reserve? He was at home according to both 1901 and 1911 census, is it possible to find if he was in the 11th between those dates?

Thanks
Andy
