Hello Andy

The Ancestry Index is notoriously bad.

What occupation is shown the 1901 and 1911 census? His later service in the RFA suggests he had been discharged from the 11th Hussars.

Hi Meurig,
His occupation in 1901 was Stone Quarry Labourer.
In 1911 it was Pan Fitter in Coke Ovens .
He was though born and brought up on a farm.

His WW1 service was with horses, we have his spurs and a nice photograph of him with his riding crop.
According to some records he was in the 105th Brigade although his medals just say 3 RFA ,from what I can gather his battery was made redundant and the men were put into the 23rd Divisional Ammunition Supply Column .
Hope this helps
Andy

Morning Andy

So he wasn't in the Army in 1901 or 1911. He may have been on the reserve and/or territorials or simply re-enlisted in 1914 on the outbreak of war - service papers should state which.

David,

Stirling puts a slightly different slant on the incident: "A detachment of 110 all ranks left for South Africa in 1899. The Regiment saw action in the siege of Ladysmith. The remainder of the Regiment had been despatched to join them but they were kept in Egypt where they had stopped off en route."

I have a QSA to L/Cpl Snape of the 11th Hussars. He earned his clasps, CC, DoL, OFS & Tr whilst attached to the 5th Lancers. Just a shame he did not venture north with them in mid October :(

It seems the 11th Hussars were split up with men attached to the 5th Lancers, 5th DG, 8th & 18th Hussars mainly.

Best wishes
David
