Here is a Transport Medal named to "W. T. St. Stephens" with the original full length of ribbon - it opened up a whole world of research!

William Trewhella St. Stephens was born in 1869 to Raynar Joseph St. Stephens (born 1834) and Matilda Richards.
He was the second son, his brother Raynar De Hele St. Stephens, followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a civil engineer.
The senior Raynar was the Chief Engineer of the Mysore Gold Mining Company and travelled widely (as did almost everyone in the family).

"W. T." grew up in the more affluent parts of London, although having very humble Cornish roots.
He was confirmed by the Royal College Of Physicians Of London in the 4th February 1893 Medical Journal, having studied at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College.

Six years later he was the Ship's Surgeon on the R.M.S. Cephalonia on Cunard's Liverpool to Boston line.

It is not certain just when he started serving as a Surgeon for Cunard, as records only go back to mid 1899, but he is on the first record.
Liverpool to Boston on R.M.S. Cephalonia, Sailing 30th May 1899. (He is record as "T. St. Stephens" on the saloon list.

That's very fine, never seen a Transport Medal to a ship's surgeon.

Thanks for posting.
