Dear Forum
I have had a quick trawl through Ancestry & FMP trying to find out if there are any papers on 2789 Pte M McLean, no luck yet, keep getting guided to another site which needs more cash to view. Is there anyone who can help with this chaps details?
This is what I have found out so far:-
2nd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders.
KIA 11th December 1899 - Magersfontein.
Originally missing- court of enquiry stated killed.
Buried on battlefield- later reinterred in West End Cemetry Kimberley.
He is also commemorated on the Seaforths memorial in Dingwall.
Medal roll- Cape Colony clasp only.

As ever your help will be most appreciated if there are any more details on 2789 Private Murdoch McLean

If you have seen his record on FmP you probably don't need to access "another site"

Have you tried the Effects data on Ancestry? It has some 1899 deaths.

I couldn't find his papers on FMP, will try the Ancestry you mentioned.

Interestingly, his entry of 87824 only shows a mere eight shillings, with the annotation "Transferred to effects 1900;1"

Is that 8 shillings sent to his next of kin or 8 shillings added to additional effects? Not much to show for dying for his country is it? Could there be another entry or do you think the trail runs cold ?

It looks like there should be another entry, Ancestry may have mangled the indexing.
