QSA (2) Orange Free State, Transvaal (4619. Pte. A: C. Marsh. 1/Rl. Drgns.).

Albert Charles Marsh was born in 1867 and first joined the British Army in January 1889, served with the 3rd Dragoon Guards. He served with the 1st (Royal) Dragoons during the Boer War and was taken prisoner at Hecpoort on 30 July 1901, as recalled in WO-108-372:

'Whilst descending rough side of a kopje, 'held up' by four Boers behind some rocks. Being covered by rifles, they surrendered.'

The Court judged the country and size of party to have been sufficient ground for surrender. Marsh was discharged in January 1902 and lived in Hook, Surbiton. He joined the Territorial Force on 14 November 1914 and served at home with the Royal Defence Corps until 7 March 1919.
