Hi Ian
There are several references to CC Baines on SANational archives NAAIRS.

Then the Cape 1908 Civil Server ce list shown CC Baines as a sub-inspector in Kimberley as shown below.
Also his son was killed in Belgium in 1916,shows he lived in Sark, Channel Islands. It also says in that medal card that his brother is CC Baines, but I think that is mistaken if one looks at the write up about his death.

Regards
Adrian

Some info gleaned from Family Search :

Colin Cuthbert Baines, born on a troopship in the Red Sea; baptised in India 28.04.1872. Son of James Edgar Baines and Mary Ann nee Eardley Howard, who married in India in 1869. Married Helen Budden in Kimberley 25.09.1909; they had seven daughters. Died in Marandellas, Rhodesia, 30.07.1961 aged 89 years and 4 months.

To put Colin Baines' service in context :
- Cape Police District 2 (Kimberley) was incorporated into the Cape Mounted Police in 1904;
- CMP, being para-military, was embodied in the Union Defence Forces rather than the SA Police in 1913, and became the 5th SA Mounted Riflemen;
- 5 SAMR was disbanded in 1920 and its members transferred to the SA Police.

The 1891 census shows James Edgar and Mary Ann Baines living in Guernsey. He was a retired colonel aged 49. Their children included Kenneth (under 1 year old). 19-year-old Colin not listed, suggesting that he had already left home.

The pinted summary of Kenneth James Mackenzie Baines' service seem a bit confused. He was clearly Colin's brother, not his son, and the service number given (2014) was Colin's.
Regards
Arthur

A big thank you to Dave, Adrian and Arthur. From the information you have kindly provided Colin Cuthbert Baines' life can now be pieced together.

Kind regards

Hello Ian1900,

I thought you would like to see these pages.

Your chap is also entitled to the CGHGS medal with Bechuanaland clasp. Attached are copies of the original nominal roll draw up for the Cape Police.

Here is a poor copy of his enlistment page in CMP 118. Note that his birth date is given as 07/03/1872 not 07/03/1873 ?

Hope this all helps with your research.
