A couple of comparison shots - the Dow DCM and another EDVII I have to R Stirling of the Cape Police.

Rory

One difference I saw in the "other place" this is discussed and is clear in your photos above - the "flourish" below the legend is quite different, the wreath is "smudged" in the "dangerous copy and the circles lack the inner circle and the arrow heads are less crisp.

Stringer SALH is interesting - a real and "dangerous copy" side by side.

Dear Rory

You are probably aware that just prior to Dow's gallant act on 22 April 1901, on 15 April 1901 `Sgt A. J. Miller' of the SALH was in command of a patrol at Bastard's Drift, Orange River Colony, when he showed `coolness in presence of superior forces and skill in extricating men'. He too received the DCM. (Stirling, The Colonials in SA at page 62). Bastard's Drift is shown by a map in the Times History to be on the Caledon river south of Wepener and therefore in the extreme south-eastern corner of the ORC. That could place elements of the SALH in the vicinity of the Cape Colony a few days later.

Best regards
Peter

Interesting,

There is a "Winter Kraal" near Smithfield, also on the Caledon River.

Could this be the "Winterskraal" in the citation, in which case Cape Colony should read Orange Free State.
