Here is the "plate 5" from Purves. I tried to play with the pic to bring up the highlights - but without much luck.

Further information:

Another DCM copy is known, named to F Stringer, also of the SA Light Horse. It was also sold by Glendining in May 1952 lot 154,bought by Spink with another DCM for 4 Pounds, as shown below.
A photo of this DCM is almost identical to the Dow copy, especially obvious is the faded lettering on the LHS of the obverse, also illustrated below.
It was later sold by DNW in 2020, where it is accompanied with the full and original DCM group to Stringer.

Kind regards
Adrian

Hi Adrian,

Thanks so much for this post; I have learnt a lot from this discussion.

The Purvis description is spot on when you compare Stringers real and fake DCM's together; for completeness I have included both pictures below.

Thanks again.

Excellent comparison photographs. We now know what to look out for.
The legend fading out towards the left rim and the cropped furthest lapel seem to be the most noticeable anomalies.

Thank you
Neville

I will also post pics of the Dow medal along with another Edward VII DCM I have - for comparison purposes - once I have received it from South Africa.

Tommy Dow has landed! - at least his medals have....

You've seen enough from the posts above to have made up your minds, one way or the other, of the veracity of his DCM. A small part or me, the part that bought the medals, still holds the hope that although the "die is cast", there are official molds out there which were used for the die casting which, if not used correctly, can give the effect discussed by Mr Purves.

One thing I have learned in many years of collecting is not to discount every possibility - there are so many variables out there which we have yet to come to grips with or be exposed to; some for the first time.

Here are some shots I took of the pair and the DCM this morning - apologies for the quality, the light was already too bright by the time the delivery man arrived.

Regards

Rory
