The Copy DCM and a renamed QSA have appeared for sale in South Africa.
When last sold it was honestly described as the Dangerous copy referenced by Purves as shown below. The QSA is a new addition, very poorly named up.

Adrian,

Thank you for alerting us to this.

The font used on the DCM is good. The two issues that I noticed were a) the spacing between letters is greater than it would normally be and b) the vertical spacing of the letters is not uniform ie the S. is too low and the A. is too high.

Very interesting to see.

Best wishes
David

Does anyone know if the ACTUAL DCM to Dow is extant? Why would anyone go these lengths to produce a perfect copy? Is there a backstory to this?

Whilst I don’t know whether the real DCM exists, I can confirm the sale in 1952 as shown below:
Note that not said to be a copy, but condition is described as Very Fine.

I took the plunge and bought these... who said the DCM was a copy? Looks very original to me. Is Mr Purvis still with us? I would like to communicate with him if anyone has contact details.

Can anyone provide more info on the action at Winterskraal on 22 April 1901 when Dow won his DCM?

Regards

Rory

Rory and others interested
When seeing the first post on this, I must say that it looked OK to me. Looking at A.A.Purves' "Collecting Medals and Decorations" 4th ed., 1983, Purves does not actually refer to Dow's DCM. He just refers to Edward VII DCM a dangerous copy. And gives details. See attached.

Due acknowledgement made to Mr. Purves for his work.
Details of Dow's DCM were furnished in LG 20/8/1901 and searchable on this site. Together with a Cpl. Kendall of the SALH, "398 Tpr. T. Dow at Winterskraal on 22/4/1901 under heavy fire at 600y went back to assist a wounded man and brought him out of action".
Regards
IL.
