I am researching a medal group to DCM (1st World War) Battery Sgt Major William George Dagg who served with the 39th Battery RFA as a gunner during the Boer War. His medal group includes a QSA with three clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State and South Africa 02. His medal roll info confirms these clasps but states that at the time hhe recived them he had been transferred to 28th battery RFA. A number of other men were similarly transfered at the same time.(1903?) Can any one suggest a reason for this.
Secondly the information suggests that the 39th battery was split into three sections which operated in slightly different areas. Is there any way of finding out which section Gnr.William Dagg 11069 served with?
I am a novice to the Boer War and would appreciate any help I can get.

Hello and Welcome......

I am sure that you have read this section of the forum......

www.angloboerwar.com/unit-information/im...tillery-39th-battery

The reason for the transfer may never really be known but my thoughts are that with the reduction of the size of the army after the war (1903) they were moved where they were needed..... RFA is not like an infantry regiment the RFA could be moved to any battery or anywhere they were needed.....

Hello,

I am new to this site, but the William George Dagg you are researching was my great grandfather. I know very little about him although I have spoken to some of his family in NZ and Oxford, although I think most of his direct family are in Kent.. He moved to Kent from Canvey Island before I was born. Are you family or just researching him? I do have a copy of his citation for the DCM. If you are family and are doing family history I would very much like to hear from you.
Thanks
Mike

There should be a Battery Digest covering the Anglo-Boer War at the RA Library - Google "Firepower" and you'll find a telephone number.

Hi Mike,
I’m new to this site and was brought here while searching for information on William George Dagg (11069). I’m not sure how old your posts are, but it was interesting to read as I didn’t know he was in the Boer War. I only have vague information on his service in India. It’d be great to hear from you as he was my Great Grandfather as well (through my Mother’s side of the family...and yes, firm roots in Kent). Please do get in touch. All the best. Alison
