Hello to all.

I'm new to the world of Boer War Medals, and was wondering if anyone knew of the existance of Distinguished Conduct Medal Citations for this period. I know they are available for WW1 Actions, but not sure about this period.

The citation i'm after is for 721 C/Sgt R.Pavett 2/nd Worc R.
LG'd on 27th Sept 1901.

thank you in advance for any assistance.

Cheers
John

Hello John.....

I am sure that you have checked the DCM listings here...... When there is a citation it has been posted but I am afraid that Pavett, though on the list, does not have a citation..... I hate to say that many of the Boer War DCM's were issued for service rather than for gallantry.....

Hi John

Pavett is mentioned on p292 of "Short Histories of the Territorial Regiments of the British Armies" by Rudolf.
His DCM was for "meritorious conduct and continued good service throughout the campaign"

Hello John,
Make no mistake, in the British Army during the Boer War, the DCM was not freely given, it would have been earned the hard way!
A friend of mine had one to a member of the Highland Brigade who carried water to men who had been under fire all morning at Magersfontein!
You did not have to kill the enemy to recieve that medal, it was for men who had distinguished themselves!

Thank you all, for looking into this for me.

I can now appreciate the difference in the awarding of Medals during this period. it's obviously written on the medal - For Distinguished Conduct.

You always assume that it's a moment of bravery or act of valour, as opposed to continuously showing that you were exceptional at your job.

Just a footnote, But his Dad, Sgt A Pavett was also in the Worcs(Retired) and so was his Brother C/Sgt A Pavett 2nd Worc, they served in the Boer war together. A proper Military Family. It makes you wonder what Weddings and Birthday Party's etc.. were like?

Again, Thank you.

Cheers
John.
