Hi Mike,
It just occured to me that "your tonight" is in fact "my tomorrow" so perhaps I need to go over to see if Paul has any of that Whisky left! :silly:
Regards Frank (still in a state of suspense!)

Hello Paul,
Well it was thirteen years ago now, it was really on day two when the bargains were to be had, it is, however, nice to have something from that particular sale, nice stuff does still turn up at a price, and there was a great deal of nice stuff that Spink did not have examples of in their sale, back then.
When I was very young, Spink were in their King St premises in St James (as they still were in 1999!) and I do remember Brian Simpkin advising me to buy only the very best I could afford, that is still valid today!
It is merely a question of defining what you really want and having the money to buy it! :)

Yup - I made a mistake with the M Btty numbers!

Having captured the M Btty roll - Kaplan's 57 is spot on.

I have been through The Register and found there 56 officers and men of Imperial regiments (mostly cavalry) entitled to RoM. Most of these men were attached to colonial units some served on the staff, many would be in Kaplan's roll but some are not such as Pte 2981 HH Harris 13th Hussars (clasps: RoM,TH,OFS,RoL,J,SA01).

So the number of RoM clasps to Imperial Units is 162 + 56 = 218 - so far.

Good Evening Meurig.....

I agree with you as to the numbers for Imperial Units.....

Here is what Kaplan has listed and he is taking his information from Hibbards published list of single bar medals:

1. Total Number of Bars Issued ................ 3002
2. Total Number of Bars to Colonial Units ..... 2840
3. Total Number of Bars to Imperial Units ..... 162

7. Medals with Def. of Kimberly - R. of Mafeking ...... 420
8. Medals with Elandslaagte - Def. of Ladysmith and
R. of Mafeking ...... 184

There is a note that the Northern Force under Col. Plumer consisted of 1515 men and not 700 as previously stated.

One man on the list has a confirmed 10 Bar Medal:

Hello Mike,
But is there not an appendix in Kaplans roll for the number of single clasp medals issued?
I would have thought as you would be dealing with what would be, in effect casualties, that he would have been very keen to establish that particular figure.
Also, does he say who did the research for him, because I would be very surprised if he had actually been over to London and done it himself, could it have been, by any chance, Diana Birch?
Regards Frank
