I am very confident that his lordship would approve of this course of action.

T J CURRAN : BURGER/PRIVATE TO LIEUT COL

I am still busy researching this fascinating recipient: I hope to get a copy of his Ceylon Diary from the Oorlogsmuseum in Bloemfontein and am following up some other leads. The Bio above is from the 1908 "Who's Who"

· OBE (Mil) 1st Type
· ABO Medal : BURGER T J CURRAN
· 1914-15 Star : MJR T J CURRAN STAFF
· BWM : T/LT COL T J CURRAN
· AVM(Bil) : MJR T J CURRAN

Awards with original ribbons as worn with MiD Oakleaf on BWM

Theo Curran served in the Boer War as a Burger in the Johannesburg Commando (PoW in May 1900 and sent to Ceylon).
In Oct 1914 he enlisted as a Private (No 194) in Van Deventers Commando, taking part in the suppression of the Rebellion till Dec 1914. His Service Card is endorsed “ineligible for 1914-15 Star)
Lo and behold : in March 1915 he is a Captain (Major in April 1915) and O/C of the Commando Depot in Cape Town. This earns him a MiD for German SWA (…excellent work…devotion to duty…) without actually setting foot there!
He then arrives in East Africa on 30 Dec 1915, earning the 1914-15 Star with one day to spare, and is placed on General Stewarts’ Staff. After serving as Post Commandant, New Moschi in 1916, he is appointed as Camp Commandant, Roberts’ Heights Cantonments, in July 1917. In September 1917 he is promoted to Temp Lieut Col and his service “under difficult conditions” results in the award of an OBE in Dec 1918.

Henk,

I think I am running out of superlatives to use with regard to your collection!

Those ribbons had me confused for a moment too!

Best wishes

Henk,
I think it is always nice to see an ABO with British Campaign medals!
