Frank

There was and still is a suburb called "Greyville" in Durban. It is centred on Durban's main and now only racecourse. It is the venue for one of South Africa's premier horse races, the 'Durban July'.

I suspect the surroundings have become rather seedy, which has been the fate of most of central Durban during the past two decades.

Regards
Brett

Hello Brett,
I rather thought that might have been the case, I noted with considerable interest that there had been a Surgeon Captain H H Grey in the Natal Troop, actually from "Greyville" too, perhaps it was so named after a family member.
Kind regards Frank

One section of the 21st RFA served with Benson at Baakenlaate.

Here's the group to Sgt T W Matthews:

DCM; QSA (4) Elandslaagte, DoL, LN, Belf (95299 Serjt T.W. Matthews 21st R.F.A), KSA (2) (95299 Serjt T.W. Matthews R.F.A.)

Thomas William Matthews DCM was announced in the London Gazette dated 31st October 1902. With 2 pages of copied service record with rare Boer war award details, "At Baakenlaagte 30/10/01 sent out with cart of ammunition, and leaving his cart in shelter, pushed on himself to guns where he was at once shot in three places, managed to return to cart to find 4 of the 6 mules killed. He started it off for camp under native driver, and it eventually arrived safe; he himself was too weak to go with it."

He enlisted 11/1/93, to India 9/10/95, to South Africa 19/9/99, to UK 4/9/02, discharged medically unfit having being severely wounded 30/11/02.

The Battle of Bakenlaagte occurred with a joint Boer attack on the rear of Colonel Benson's No 3 Flying Column was returning to camp. The column rearguard was attacked by some 900 Boers and was outnumbered 4 to 1. The rearguard's action allowed the rest of the column to deploy in a defensive position, but was nearly wiped out in the process with 73 killed and originally buried on Gun Hill, the scene of the action, but later reinterred in Primrose Cemetery.

All clasps confirmed on service papers.

Also sold with 1900 Queen Victoria chocolate tin as issued.

Warwick and Warwick. Oct 2013. Estimate £2000. Actual £2,200. Surely, a bargain!
