I have been thinking about the NFA's ineffectual contribution to the Battle of Elandslaagte. Natal's mounted regiments present (Natal Mounted Rifles and Natal Carbineers) also contributed little, except perhaps in clearing the battlefield of casualties. Nevertheless, to a collector with my interests their medals are highly prized. Shown below are QSA's with 'Elandslaagte' clasps to men of both the NMR and NC. Corporal Waller, NMR, went on to serve in the Volunteer Composite Regiment and was awarded the KSA, the whereabouts of which is not known.

Regards
Brett

I couldn't agree more. I think my comment was meant to feel sorry for them really, in that I am sure that they wanted to be involved, but when you were a colonial regiment attached to this wondrous British Army, I suppose it was a little over powering.

Thanks for the two medals though. I haven't got anything to the Natal regiments yet, just waiting for that one or two to come up, you know the ones:)

One the basis of the (very reasonable) view that you cannot see too many QSAs, here are some Elandslaagte QSAs from the next DNW auction. All pictures displayed courtesy of DNW.

To 3 Gunner W. Graham, 42nd Battery, Royal Field Artillery

To 4846 Pte. J. Sullivan, 5/Lcrs. He died of enteric at Ladysmith on 22 January 1900

To 4075 Pte. D. Fownes, 5/Lcrs, He died of disease at Middleburg, 3 December 1900

The best last?

To 211 Gnr. W. Wainwright, Natal F. Arty

They do look good. The NFA is on the list, obviously taking back all I have said about them recently!!
