Hello;

New here. I have been offered a QSA with clasps awarded to a surgeon (attributed).

Does anyone know if surgeons were actually part of the military with military officer ranks (as they mostly are today) or were they civilians working for the military ?

Further, I am lead to believe that QSAs awarded surgeons are relatively scarce. The clasps awarded are South Africa 1901, Transvaal,
Orange Free State and Cape Colony. The costs asked for this QSA is a tad over $600 USD (pricey).

What are your thoughts ?

Thank you, Willow1899

Hi willow1899,

And a warm welcome to the forum.
I do not have a QSA to a surgeon in my collection but I have seen them come up for sale on dealers websites.
I would think they would be relatively scare, though not quite my field so maybe one of our more experienced members might help with your question.
If you could you add the name, this might be helpful.

Cheers
Paul :)

Hi Paul:

The name on the QSA is R.W. DODGESON.

I'm surprised at the prices of QSAs today. Many years ago they were quite inexpensive; however, today they seem to have crept up in value. :ohmy:

Thanks for the welcome, Willow

Good afternoon,
To answer your question, this man was a civilian, however, with the trappings of an officer and addressed as "Sir" by the rank and file of the RAMC, a good scarce medal, buy it!
