A new Regiment to my collection recently acquired.

5785 Private Ernest.E.Jones Welsh Regiment.

Ernest Jones was born in Carnarvon in the County of Caernarvonshire Wales in the year 1880
He attested on the 6th December 1898 for the Welsh Regiment.
His age is stated as 18 years and 11 months and his trade was a Collier.
As normal for the era Ernest was not of large frame measuring 5ft 4" in height with a weight of 114lbs.
His chest measurement was 32" fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.
His religious denomination was C of E.
Ernest spent the first year of his duties on Home service until he ventured to South Africa on the 4th November 1899 he was to only spend 216 days there.
Private Jones was at Driefontein where he received gun shot wounds to his hand and his right leg.

The effects of these wounds made his permanently unfit for further service.
I note on his service sheet under "Special instances of gallant conduct" it states "Some" it would be good to know what theses were.
Ernest left South Africa on the 7th June 1900 and continued "Home service" until 31 January 1901
Private Jones was entitled to the QSA with clasps Driefontein,Paardeberg & Relief of Kimberley.
On his discharge sheet his conduct is noted as "very good" and his intended place of residence was to be in Clydach Vale in South Wales.
I am a novice on The Welsh Regiment apart from the information listed on this website, as ever anyone offering info and comments very welcome.

Thank you for looking
Paul :)

Paul,

A very nice medal. Impressive photography too.

It would have been great if those recording his service had been a little more explicit.

Kind regards
David

Paul,

Are you sure that the word you are looking at is "Some" in special instances of gallant conduct?

I believe that it is "None" have a look at the word "hand" on Gun Shot to Hand, the "n" is written in the same style and is the same as the word None in Education and Instruction!!!

Just a thought.

Cheers

Hi Adrian,

Thank you for your observations.
Looking again I would say you are correct.
What confused me was under "injuries in or by service" I assumed that would have to read "Some" not "None"
I read them all as "Some" wishful thinking I guess

Cheers
Paul :)

Paul,

What made me take a second look was that I have always noticed on the papers they state for example next to Education: 1st Class Certificate or 2nd Class Certificate etc.

They never wrote "Some" if indeed the chap had a qualification so I thought that "None" would therefore be correct.
