Well, whoever it came from, I like it very much, it is a good medal as far as I am concerned, I would be happy with it as a casualty for the western front.

Hello Paul

A good medal to a good regiment, these guys earned their medals; the march to Paardeberg was "hard yards" indeed.

Research wise this medals show up the deficiencies in current sources. There is no 5785 E Jones Welch Rgt in the official casualty rolls, so the WO97 paper is the only source for the casualty information (and thankfully they still exist). Would be interesting to know if he is listed in the contemporary newspapers.

Hello Meurig,

I thought this one may be of interest to you.
Yes its a shame the casualty rolls have not been documented so as you say thankfully the WO97 still exists.
Thank you for your comments.

Paul :)

Gentlemen,
I think if you are going to buy a medal as a casualty and pay the additional cost, it is very important to make sure that he is indeed a casualty!
They sometimes do not appear on the returns, so anything else is worth having, whether his service papers, with the all important details, a newspaper or better still, an original letter from the War Office to the fellows father or mother etc.
