As I've mentioned elsewhere I'm new to the forum and have just started researching the few QSA's I've bought over the years. I have a few questions which I hope folk can help me with. Please set me right if I've got things wrong-still trying to get my head round the entitlement rules!

1. Am I right in thinking that if a QSA has a date clasp there will be no associated KSA?

2. Am I right in thinking that the absence of a date clasp does not indicate whether or not there will be an associated KSA and that the only way to find out is to check the records? For example, a man could have battle clasps for events in 1900 and have no service in 01 or 02 and hence no entitlement to a KSA. Conversely, as I've already discovered, three of my QSA's with no date clasp do have associated KSA's.

3. Are QSA's collected in their own right, regardless of entitlement to a KSA? It certainly looks that way based on what I see on dealers' sites and ebay. I guess the answer to that will vary by individual collector.

4. As mentioned above I've discovered when checking clasp entitlement that the holders of three of my QSA's were entitled to KSA's, but in the case of two of these I couldn't find any records of QSA clasp entitlement. I'm using Ancestry. What other search methods are there? The two concerned are 25412 Gnr F Wilkins 10th Mountain battery ( clasps- Belfast, LN, OFS,DOL ) and 14085 Dvr T H Williams ASC ( Dri,Paar,ROK,Modd, Belmont).

Thanks for bearing with me.

Hello Patrick......

1. Am I right in thinking that if a QSA has a date clasp there will be no associated KSA?

As a rule of thumb yes..... But I have a case where there is a 1901 bar on the QSA but after going into a second unit he got a KSA.....(He should have returned the 1901 bar)

Yes or he could have been wounded and sent home of KIA / DOD or finished time served.....

3. Are QSA's collected in their own right, regardless of entitlement to a KSA? It certainly looks that way based on what I see on dealers' sites and ebay. I guess the answer to that will vary by individual collector.

I agree I will collect a QSA if it has a KSA or not..... 95% of the Canadians who served (In Canadian units did not get a KSA).....

4. As mentioned above I've discovered when checking clasp entitlement that the holders of three of my QSA's were entitled to KSA's, but in the case of two of these I couldn't find any records of QSA clasp entitlement. I'm using Ancestry. What other search methods are there? Thank you very much. What is the best route to getting to this sort of information? I thought I'd grasped it last week, but I seem to be running into closed doors at times e.g .not being available to access online information which is in digitised form at the archive free. Any chance of a tutorial?

Regards

Patrick
