I should have completed the research to make this list 100% accurate (comparing DTD application forms, WWI Service Cards/Files/ Despatches for GSWA as well as Death Notices) more than ten years ago when I still lived in Pretoria and had unrestricted access to the SADF Archives. In one or two cases it may be that the father got the DTD and the son the DSO.

De Jager was acting general in 1902 in my home district of Piet Retief.

A sad incident was related to me years ago, which is was also described by a German teacher named HF Wichmann in his memoirs.

Unaccompanied by his men, De Jager approached a British blockhouse where a friend of his who had turned traitor and joined the enemy, approached him in an apparent friendly move to talk. At the last moment the friend lunged for the De Jager, whereupon a desperate struggle for life and death ensued. De Jager must have dropped his rifle which which had had the man covered initially. Being of equal strength, the outcome of the fight was uncertain. Fortunately Piet de Jager was able to point his revolver across his shoulder. He fired, and the bullet hit his friend in the forehead, whereupon the struggle was over.

The man was buried by his British comrades and legend has it that the grave has been struck so many times by lightning that they gave up repairing it. I knew the deceased man's descendants so he will remain unnamed, just as Wichmann also did not identify him in his memoirs.

A sad story, which should ideally be remembered wherever those medals find a home.
