Elmarie,
Thankyou, that's very kind, I take it the panels are not original to monument and have been replaced at some point in the second half of the last century?
Sincerely Frank

A photograph I don't believe I have seen before. Taken from the Utrecht Commando's position (most shots of Intombi were taken from the slopes of Umbulwana).

Good image, Neville!
Why do you think Maurice got the site of the camp wrong? Or is that a Times History map? I’m in SA and away from my maps…

It's beyond me. Intelligence maps (both Boer & British) show the neutral camp straddling the railway line, and Amery has it to the east of it. The Official History map is the only one I am aware of that (incorrectly) places the camp on the west side.

British Field Intelligence map prepared for the relieving force (surveyed by Capt. A. Kenney Herbert, F.I.D.; printed at Pietermaritzburg, 6 Dec 1899)

Boer intelligence map (surveyed by E.J.P. Jorissen).

Times History, Volume II, facing p. 216.
