Does anybody know anything about this township. My great uncle died there on 23/4/1902 Private harold Prescott RAMC no 16597.I understand it held a British garrison in the town.
Any help would be really appreciated

Hi Alexp, welcome aboard. Standerton was quite an important location for the British military. There was the 4th Stationary Hospital there from 31 August 1900 to 25 January 1901 which became the 17th General Hospital which was at Standerton from 1 February 1901 to 31 May 1902. There was also the Standerton to Ermelo blockhouse line. Standerton was also the site of one of the larger concentration camps.

According to a note under remarks on the Queen's South Africa Medal (QSA) roll for the RAMC Pte. Harold Prescott "died on service, 17 Gen Hospital, Standerton." He was awarded the QSA with Transvaal and South Africa 1902 clasps. Strangely, there are two casualty returns for him. One for the RAMC and one for the ASC. Date and place of death are the same and so is the service number and rank. Both note that he died at Standerton on 23-4-02.

Cheers,

Mark

thanks for that info. Yes the medal role is correct i have the medal now with the 2 clasps. Interestingly he also has another medal a bronze one with George V11 on it. On the reverse it states South Africa 1899-1902 with Magnus prioratus hospitalis sanctijohannis jerusalem in anglia. Black ribbon with white edgees on both sides. Any ideas ?

Thanks again for the other information

cheers

John

Might be St John Brigade Medal. Take a look at the medal under Boer War period in the medal section of the forum (top left heading bar). If not I'll check in the MYB when I get home for other possibilities.

Cheers,

Mark

Hello John,

I shall note your Uncle's name as from time to time I pass through Standerton and right pass the Boer War Cemetery.Shall take a photo if the grave is marked.

I have family in Trichard which is 60Km's from there and visit perhaps twice a year.
