From Spink Circular, September 1977

QSA (1) DoM (E. Dutton, Mafeking Town Gd.)

Apparently, this man was the eldest survivor alive in 1966.

Another inexpensive addition to my Defenders of Mafeking collection. As you see no clasp or suspender, the disc is in lovely condition but alas the naming has been filed off - but enough remains to identify 58 Pte RF Oakden, Bechuanaland Rifles.

Haven't identified the recipient, he also earned T, SA01 and SA02 clasps. These were sent to an address in Rochdale. There are two "RF Oakden" in Rochdale at this time, one a wool merchant, the other a youth - I suspect it is the latter, but no conclusive proof.

"58 Pte R"

"Pte R "

"Pte R F O"

unit name - no problem here!

According to Colin Walker's Mafeking Siege Register, he also earned "South Africa 1902".
