Cr. Vigor then presented to Private Albert TURNER, of the Tasmanian 5th Contingent, a gold medal inscribed as follows – “Presented to Private A. Turner by his Blackwood friends on his return from the South African War, 1902”. He remarked that Mr TURNER is a native of Blackwood, but being in Tasmania he joined the 5th Contingent there. When he came back to Blackwood, but for the death of his father, he would have been welcomed with greater display. Private TURNER, who was in uniform, was received with rounds of applause. He also thanked them very much for their kindness. Like the rest of the Contingents, the 5th went to South Africa to do its duty, and although they had a hard time they did their work well, for the last commander the fought under (Colonel Doran) in bidding farewell, said he would sooner be leading them into a good fight then saying good-bye.
