Sold with a copy of the recommendation for reward from the Senior Chaplain to the Forces in South Africa, dated 6 June 1902, which states: ‘Revd. R. T. Gardner (Acting Chaplain). The Acting Chaplains have been the bulk of our Department. Wherever Mr Gardner has been placed he has won the highest commendations from all ranks. He is earnest, tactful, socially most agreeable, and has spent considerable private means in carrying out his public service. I cannot speak too highly. He served in S. Africa since June 1900. No previous recognition. In my opinion the best man we have had of any kind.’.
