Deane | Thomas | | Colonel | He was born in Dublin in 1841, and is son of S C Deane. He served in India with the King's Dragoon Guards, 21st Hussars, and the Viceroy's bodyguard, 16th Bengal Cavalry; he has acted as deputy secretary to the Government of India in the Military Secretariat, in which position he served for 13 years; he acted as Assistant Controller of Transport and Supply during the Afghan War, and was thanked by S of S for India for his services in the field; was director of the Army Remount Department in India for nearly ten years, and is now employed under the India Office to select and purchase in England horses for the Indian studs, being an authority on the selection of thoroughbred horses for stud purposes. Colonel Deane has seen service in South Africa in 1900-1, with the Imperial Yeomanry, when he commanded the depot of that force at Elandsfontein, and was employed for three years in connection with its organisation. His recommendations on remount organisation during the war were specially called attention to by the War Commissioners, and he has contributed many articles to the Press on military organisation.
