Given that it states the wound was to both arms and hip, I can only think it says radius. However, if that is the case, it is shocking handwriting ...

There was certainly a blockhouse at Maraisburg, as the Blockhouse Map published in the Professional Papers of the Corps of Royal Engineers (1904) shows. Blockhouses are marked as red dots.

The red lines indicate blockhouse lines along the railway.

Neville is correct with radius which is the larger of the two bones in the forearm. (The smaller one is the ulna).

Jackson was invalided to pension and has a PIN/71 file at the NA. There will be tons of information in that file including medical reports but this series not available online.

Gentlemen - thank you for your helpful responses & Neville especially for the wonderful map. For my first query radius definitely has it. For my second query I am now content that Charles Maltby almost certainly was killed whilst on blockhouse duty. However I am still puzzled by how he managed to earn all 3 state clasps. I know he set off for SA on 23rd March 1901 meaning he would have arrived mid April. I don't know which port he disembarked at but I don't think that matters. I know he died at Maraisburg on 17th June 1901 i.e. almost exactly 2 months after he arrived. I presume like other IY companies they would have spent some time in a camp near their port of arrival being knocked into shape. So in a month he managed to be in the OFS and Transvaal as well - I find this surprising - excuse my amateur map designed to illustrate my concern.
