Thanks for the image of Sandberg, Neville.

Regarding who originally took the photographs: I'm realising that Jan van Hoepen was extremely prolific - to the extent of being almost single handedly responsible for much of what we see today. Almost every image of the Natal campaign from the Boer perspective - if it is on a large frame format with good resolution, good composition, and good lighting - seems to be from van Hoepen.
A tiny selection of his work can be downloaded here www.getty.edu/art/collection/person/105MT2 and I'd be keeen to hear of other sites.
I think the Lund brothers, Gell, and other studios seem to have either got hold of his plates when he was deported to Holland in June 1900, or have made copies of varying quality from his prints.
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

Rob, this is a bit of a stab in the dark. I compared the faces with photographs from books and from my collection. Meyer I'm pretty sure of. Van Velden’s attribution is purely based on the fact he has a piece of paper next to him and his role was Government Secretary. Esselen and Jacobs were often with Botha, also at the Klerksdorp conference. Wynand Viljoen’s loose attribution is based on his reputation as a tough guy, his closeness to Botha and his picture in Die Helde Album.
Other men who may have been there are staffers N.J. de Wet (also a “secretaries”) and Dirk Overgauw van Velden. The men opposite Botha are clearly ZAR Kommandante/Generaals. Perhaps somewhere a record of this meeting exists.

General Botha’s staff (from van Zyl’s “Die Helde Album”, unfortunately without identification. The photograph was lifted by van Zyl from one of Penning’s books and perhaps annotated there.

Good morning,

I am seeking help with one word from BP's Mafeking diary. This is from a section where he is talking about sifting the horses in the Bechuanaland Rifles for ones no longer useful for service. Here he has identified some that would be useful in the Transport Department.

Several shown up for ____ I ordered to be tried for Transport teams.

It looks like vire or vice but were would fit the context.

Thank you in advance.
Dr David Biggins

possibly "vice", an unwanted misbehaviour interfering with usefulness of the animal, in this instance as a riding horse, but could be acceptable as a draught horse, subject to a successful trial
