Hello

I was wondering if anybody knows anything about the Volunteer Regiments in the Boer War? How many or the names of them? I am researching my nans uncle who is said to have been in the Boer War, i have posted on here about him and was told that it looks like he was in a Volunteer Regiment, so wanted to find out what it could have been.

Thanks
Kelly

Kelly

I cannot speak for 'Volunteer Regiments' in a British context, but in South Africa they were regiments made up of 'territorials', i.e. volunteers who were in civilian employment, but who joined the regiment in regular camps and exercises in peacetime, but then became fulltime soldiers in times of crisis.

I can give you the names of the volunteer regiments in the Colonies of Natal and the Cape, but I suspect you are thinking of British regiments.

Regards
Brett

Hello Brett and Mike, thank you both for your help. I am mainly interested in any sort of British Volunteer Regiment that could have been involved in the War. I know very little about the Boer War. I have been told that the person i am researching looks like he was a Volunteer due to the insignia on his lower arm. I have also been told that he could have been in a Essex Regiment as that was where he was living. I am struggling to find any sort of war record about him
Thanks
Kelly

The obvious question is what were his full names?

Given that and whatever else you know we might be able to track down a medal roll.
