This is the medal I bought today:

9870 Pte. William Hall 1st Batt.Rifle Brigade Wounded at Pieters Hill February 27th 1900

William Hall was born in London in 1870 in the Parish of St.Martins.
He attested on the 17th December 1888 at Winchester for the Rifle Brigade.
On attestation his trade is shown as Cellarman and is noted as living with his parents.
His description is quite unusual for the time with a height of 5ft 10" and weighing 160lbs.
Williams service record seems fairly unblemished showing only 17 days in military prison in his 17 years service.
He spent his service in the East Indies, Hong Kong and Singapore before seeing service in South Africa arriving 28th October 1899.
During his brief stay of 199 days William was wounded at Pieters Hill on 27th February 1900

His service record shows he passed exams for promotion to Corporal and later to Sergeant though these were not fulfilled.
Williams medal entitlement was QSA with clasps for Cape Colony,Tugela Heights and Relief of Ladysmith.
Judging by his Fathers address I assume he came from a family of decent standing being Whitcomb Street Leicester Square London.

Hello Paul,
Well, I can see why you bought that, I was very keen on Natal when I started collecting and that is a good honest medal of the type I would have bought, I hope you are pleased with it, the fight for Ladysmith was very intense indeed.
Kind regards Frank

Hi Frank,

Yes a Rifle Brigade was missing from my collection and I have recently read about the last battles before the relief so this one caught my attention.

Frank,

Yes I assume so, I believe they were worn with a rosette?
Bought it from a badge dealer friend who said it came from a collection here.
