On WO100/283p190 he is listed as the most senior officer (the other a 2nd Lt) in the MTG.

53 medals to the unit, according to a number written on the roll.

For many men a note says 'Called out for active military service against the enemy by Major Graham, Commandant, but did not engage enemy'.

Is the medal impressed or engraved?

Yes I noticed the remarks on the rolls, thanks for that.
Medal is only impressed which is a shame.
Am I right in thinking Malmesbury was Jan Smuts birthplace?
