Mark Wilkie has very kindly supplied the link above to the replica in Johannesburg of Edinburgh's Scottish Horse Memorial. It has been vandalised, a common occurrence in South Africa, and there is a plan to move it to a safer location.

Hello Brett,
Wonderful clear photos, a pity about the need for a fence and then the additional wire on the top! :(

It may well be that vandals do more damage to South Africa's cultural heritage than lightning, so fences are more useful in preserving our cultural heritage than lightning conductors. In the unlikely event that the Scottish Horse Memorial does get moved to a safer place, perhaps the lightning conductor can be dispensed with, so there will be one less eyesore.

Hello Brett,
So this is a replica of the one in Edinburgh, how old is it? cannot help but feel, it should be the other way around, this corps was, after all, an SAMIF unit.
Kind regards Frank

It may have been a mistake to refer to the Johannesburg memorial as a 'replica'. I read somewhere that the memorial was created in 'duplicate', which implies equal status for them. Perhaps it was the idea of the Marquis of Tullibardine and his money that were behind the creation of the two memorials, one in the country where the regiment was raised and one in the homeland of the Marquis and many of the men who served in the regiment.

It is a sign of the times that the Edinburgh memorial is intact, respected and well maintained, while the one in Johannesburg is damaged, largely disrespected and with an uncertain future, a description that could also apply to the Transvaal Scottish Regiment, under whose care the memorial falls.

I expect that there may be many memorials to individual men, who died in the Boer War, that were duplicated in Britain and South Africa, but I wonder if there are other regimental examples?

Regards
Brett
