Mike

This is a great example of co-operation across the Old Empire. A request from South Africa by way of Britain was answered from Canada. Many thanks.

The lists of Natal Native Scouts collected by Robert Samuelson include one compiled by Lazarus Xaba, a Chief Scout from Driefontein farm, a Christian Settlement near Ladysmith. Driefontein was in enemy territory during the Siege of Ladysmith and Lazarus Xaba co-ordinated scouting activities from the farm. John Lambert writes as follows:
"Scouts were hidden, housed and fed at Driefontein as they moved between Ladysmith and other places. Acts of sabotage were also planned from the farm. Simeon Kambule's wife, Esther, for example, provided George Xaba with weapons to attack the railway line between Besters and Brakvaal stations."
Lazarus Xaba's name appears on the FID QSA medal roll, although he did not in fact receive the medal.

One of the Scouts who served under Lazarus Xaba was Jele Butelezi (not Eutclezi), whose name appears on the Scottish Horse memorial. He was clearly one of the Natal Scouts, who later left the Colony to serve with units operating in the Transvaal and Orange Free State, including the Scottish Horse.

I wonder if any history of the Scottish Horse gives details of where and when Jele Butelezi was killed?

Regards
Brett
