ARTIST: François-Rupert Carabin.

A magnificent French pro Boer silver medal struck in high relief. Issued when President Kruger arrived in France towards the end of 1900. Exceedingly rare in silver.

François-Rupert Carabin was a French sculptor having been born in Saverne, Bas-Rhin in 1862. As a French sculptor known for his Art Nouveau style. At the age of sixteen years, he was apprenticed to a an engraver in Paris. He is well-known for many monuments commemorating those killed during the Great War. He died in Strasbourg in 1932.

Silver. Rectangular plaque.
REVERSE: “Zur Erinnerung an die Beispiellosen Volks-Huldigungen in Köln A/RH.
1.-6. Dezember 1900”.
SIZE: 55.50 mm x 37.05 mm
WEIGHT: 41.57 grams
ARTIST: Lauer. (Probably Wolfgang Lauer of the firm L. Chr. Lauer, Nuremberg Germany)

This is the actual medal illustrated in Hern’s Handbook.

It has been reported that this medal was struck at the instigation of Bachoven von Eecht. It is the earliest of all the commemorative medals struck in honour of the president’s 70th birthday on 10 October 1900. On that day the President was in Lourenço Marques awaiting the arrival of a ship to transport him to France.

SIZE: 30.00 mm x 30.00 mm

Issued to mark the declaration of Peace in South Africa on 31 May 1902. The firm of C. Fortmann donated the entire proceeds to the Boer Widows and Orphans Fund. The larger medal sold for 30 guilders for gold, 4 guilders for silver and 2 guilders for bronze.

Johannes Cornelis Wienecke was a leading Dutch medallist who was born in Heiligenstadt in 1872. He is well-known amongst numismatists for his design of the 4th portrait of Queen Wilhelmina used on Dutch coins between 1922 and 1945. He worked many years in Zeist. In 1922 he also designed the logo of the Permanent Court of International Justice, which continues to be used today by the International Court of Justice.
