Issued on the initiative of the Belgian newspaper “le Petit Bleu” in order to make a presentation to Queen Wilhelmina for her wonderful conduct towards President Kruger.

Hippolyte Leroy was a Belgian sculptor and medallist born in Liege in 1857. He studied in Ghent and Paris. He died in 1943.

WEIGHT: 8.06 grams.

Issued to commemorate the visit by President Kruger to Amsterdam on the 19th December 1900. Known as the “Full Face” medallion, being one of the few medallions showing his full face.

Wilhelm Meyer and Franz Wilhelm were the proprietors of the firm of die sinkers known as “The Stuttgarter Metallwaren Fabrik” which was initially established by Meyer in 1860. He was joined by his brother-in-law Franz in 1876. Wilhelm was born in 1840 and had studied sculpture and engraving at the Stuttgart School of Art whereas Franz was born in 1846 and was an engraver.

Original striking.

Bronze. Circular.
DIAMETER: 68.51 mm
WEIGHT: 151.50 grams.
ARTIST: Henri Du Bois. Minted at Monaie De Paris.

This original striking as offered in this Lot is rare.

This medal was struck in June 1902 and commemorates President Kruger’s stay in Utrecht.

The President posed personally for du Bois. Restrikes of this medal were issued by Armscor and by the National cultural history Museum in Pretoria.

Fortunately for collectors the restrike date is struck into the edge of the piece. These restrikes were issued in plash cases together with a certificate.

Ernest Henri Dubois was born in Dieppe in 1863. He studied at the École des Arts Décoratiif and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he studied under Alexandre Falguière, Henri Chapu and Jules Chaplain.

He was awarded a Medal of Honour for his sculptural work on the tomb of Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet in Meaux Cathedral and was subsequently appointed as a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur.

This plaque was struck on the occasion of President Kruger’s stay in Utrecht and the declaration of Peace in South Africa. It is recorded that Kruger personally posed for Henri du Bois. The reverse depicts a female figure, the classic symbol of peace, rising up into the sun lit sky above the ashes.
