Another, again, gathering dust here, is Bearer Markham's attractive six clasp medal, although, sadly for any potential buyer, Markham also earned a quite rare KSA!

John Walmsley Kershaw was insolvent on a number of occasions in the late 1880's and the subject of not a few court cases where he was on the wrong side of Rex.

Natal being a very small place I wonder in what way he was related to Alfred Wesley Kershaw, a leading light in Victorian times and several times Mayor of Pietermaritzburg.

This all adds to the value of the medal as I see it.

Hello Rory,
I cannot help but think that the medals of Kershaw and Markham are in the wrong place, they should be in South Africa!

Very true Frank

We'll have to prevail on Brett as this is one of his collecting themes. If he doesn't intend to go a few rounds with Lord A on that lady's gallantry group then perhaps Kershaw and Markham can be "repatriated" :)

Hello Rory,
That is very interesting, so he was not one of the many uitlander's from the Rand then?
Regards again Frank

No Frank - I think rather more "home grown". The casualty Brett has to Doble (also NVAC) was like-wise a Natal man although his family had spent a number of years on the diamond diggings in Kimberley.

Further research is necessary but I would think that there were quite a number of local lads who,as has been pointed out somewhere in this post, couldn't find a spot in the regular regiments such as the Natal Carbineers/Natal Mounted Rifles/Durban Light Infantry etc. and joined the NVAC as a result.

Rory
