Brett,
I don't know about " Great Minds", I never thought about going through the forum

The Dooley Bearer QSA (Talana, Defence of Ladysmith) sound very nice.

All the best,
James

Dear Brett,

I came across some interesting figures yesterday. Frederick Treves' account of the Natal 'Body Snatchers' was the first to be published, in his A Tale of A Field Hospital in November 1900. Treves correctly states that the number of volunteers raised by Colonel Gallwey was 2,000. However, he does not distinguish between the NVAC and the Imperial Bearer Corps (IBC).

In his submission of evidence to the Royal Commission on the Treatment of the Sick and Wounded in the South African Campaign (1901), Colonel Gallwey stated that the strength of the NVAC was 1,415 bearers and the IBC 600 bearers.

Best wishes,

Justin

I think we could agree that we have 'great minds', even if no-one else shares that opinion! The Talana/Defense of Ladysmith Dooley Bearer was one of my best acquisitions this millennium (or perhaps ever), because such a medal seemed unobtainable. It was entirely due to the kindness of another forum member that it came my way.

Justin
Thank you for that additional information. When I became infatuated with the 'Body Snatchers', I decided to buy a copy of Treves' book. That turned out to be easier said than done, which is just as well because I am supposed to be reducing the size of my library, not adding to it.

Regards to you both.
Brett

Brett,
I was lucky enough to obtain a copy of of "Treves" book a few years ago, but it is not in the best of conditions. I enjoyed reading it never the less, as Treves tells it as it is.
It's not a big book, I was surprised as its size, only 117 pages, 6" X 8". Still cost me (30GBP) $60 AUD here in Tasmania, but well worth the money.

James.

Dear all,

Here is a rare photograph of the 'Body Snatchers', titled 'Uitlander Corps at Colenso' and taken from the Black and White Budget of 3 February 1900.

Best,

Justin
