Regarding Henry Gorton and his rugby playing for both his school and the town, it would have been both at the town's ground at Peel Croft, which was used by his school, but, also at the meadow cricket ground and after 1890 at the Crescent Brewery ground.
The town club is one of the oldest here and indeed in the world, it was formed in 1870 and because of that, it was for many years able to call itself a football club
Anyway, this is the place where the young Gorton's would have spent at least some of their time on the turf.
The gates are not original and date form much later in the 20th Century.

But, this is the hallowed turf! :)

The visitor away stand is a modern replacement, however, the home stand, dressing rooms etc are much older and a very rare tale of survival in the 21st Century here, I'd like to be able to tell you it was original to Gorton's time, but, I cannot, it is thought to be early 20th Century, looks, smells and indeed feels the part though. :)

Okay then Brett,
Back to the Gorton's parish, this was at it's centre, it was both the parish church for the town back then and it was also the Gorton's school church.
The parish bounderies have changed several times since Henry Gorton's time, but, back then, they lived well within its boundries, moreover, it was also their family church.

It is only about three hundred years old, but, a church has stood here for over a thousand years!

It is now a church without a parish!

Thank you, Frank, for the latest photographs. I have printed them, but they will be redone later by someone with a colour printer. I hope that the church will stay as it is and not be converted into McDonalds, or something equally sacriligeous.

Regards
Brett

Don't bother, I took the liberty of taking high resolution photos which I will send to you as soon as I can get to my desk top, I will also include a selection of high quality prints with the next packet I send down to you.
