You know Brett,
There are only a handful of memorials to the Imperial Light Horse here, as you would expect and now I have been able to add another to the list!
I have you to thank for that! :)
Kind regards Frank

Thank you for the clear pictures of the memorials and their transcriptions. Gorton was clearly highly thought of by old school friends and, later, by his ILH comrades, so I am pleased that a dedicated memorial to him exists. Otherwise, he is a 'died of wounds' footnote on ILH memorials in South Africa.

Also, his mother must have been a very special and much loved person. I have felt sure that she was the person who kept Gorton's QSA polished, a tribute to the only one of her children who went to the Colonies, and, sadly, who never returned.

Regards
Brett

Good morning Brett,
The photos that you will actually recieve will be much better than these two and in a differant format, so just bare with me until next week.
The problem here was that it soon became evident I did not have enough camera to do it as I would normally, the natural light was the only thing that I could not remove, I left my SLR at home, had I thought it would be like that I would have taken both it and a screen too.
I'm going out for my morning ride so I'll talk later if you are on here.
Kind regards Frank

Good morning Brett,
I am wondering, do you have any pictures of Manchester Fort and Caesar's Camp as it is today?
What is left, do any of the stone sangers held by the 1st Manchester's still survive today?
Kind regards Frank

I am most grateful to you for all the trouble you have taken to provide a foundation for Gorton's file. Hopefully, this file will always stay with Gorton's medal and stand as a memorial to a man who gave his life for 'Queen and Country'.

In his account of the Battle of Wagon Hill, George Gibson wrote:
"Trooper 'Dicky' Gorton received no less than 13 wounds. When he was being carried away on a stretcher, he had a cheery smile left and waved a hand to his understanding comrades, in mute farewell. He died four days later. His surviving comrades like to think that:-
'All the trumpets sounded for him on the other side.'"

Since you have given pictures of the area where Gorton started his life, I am attaching one of the area on Wagon Hill where he was mortally wounded.

Regards and thanks again.
Brett
