Good morning Brett,
When I looked at their roll in WO100/283 pages 134 and 135, I see that there are a number of men who have been crossed out, also there is in the remarks column a note "whether served in any other corps" for some, the word "yes" is shown, for many the phase "special service subsequently resigned"
Would I be correct in assuming that many of these men left and joined the Natal Volunteers, what do you think.
Kind regards Frank

Hello Brett,
Just to let you know I have today resolved the remaining issues with Trooper Henry Gorton and this matter is now complete as far as I am concerned, so I will be in touch.
Kind regards Frank

Moreover, it's price is only relevant, as far as having enough money to buy it in the first place goes!

"Dicky" Gorton's medal is a very special one. Everything about it (except its price), including the overpolishing by his proud next-of-kin (probably Mum), appeal to me. Your additions to the record of the man behind the medal are welcome additions to the Gorton file. Now for his childhood and his rugby-playing career for the Transvaal and South Africa in the 1890's ............

Many thanks, Frank. Getting the results of your latest investigation gives me something else to look forward to.

On a negative note, another two attempts to get more details of Gorton's rugby-playing record in SA have proved fruitless.

Good morning Brett,
Henry Gorton won an international rugby football cap whilst in Africa and it was that, and only that, which allowed him to play against the Lions, the answers are in your country, I hope and not in mine.
Kind regards Frank.

Do you drive around with one of those car stickers, you know the ones, a little Union Jack with the words "Natal, the last outpost" ?

No, Frank, I do not have a "Last Outpost" sticker. I did once have a Colony of Natal flag on a wall in our house, but I gave that to my British son to remind him of his origins, so it may now be on a wall in a house in darkest Hampshire.

The "Last Outpost" signs have fallen out of fashion in Natal. Most of those who once flaunted them have emigrated, died or repented.

Brett
