I´m looking for any information I can get on my grandfather George Goodger Clark, Son of John Clark (builder) & Mary Elizabeth Oake, involvement in the Boer War.

He was born 17 September 1879 at 157 Price Street, Smethwick, Staffordshire, UK and died 6th March 1965, Solihul, Birmingham, UK

I don`t know if he was entitled to any awards or medals

The following is the only information I have from a very elderly cousin, perhaps some of you good people would know how I could verify this information and find out more details?

Tropper 16th Squadron, Imperial Yeomanry (Gloucestershire Hussars).
Enlisted Kings Norton Barracks, (Birmingham, I presume?) Circa 1900 and went to Boer War as part of the Second Contingent (1901-1902). (He is not on the 1901 census with his wife and child) Kar? as a gentleman ranker, he took his own horse. Continually in action escorting supply columns, dealing with Boer guerilla attacks, manning armoured trains etc.
Regimental scout checking advances ahead of main body, eventually shot by Boer sniper in back in Vaal River?
(Transvaal) near Vereeniging. Spent 3 days in horse litter cross country until reaching hospital.

Granted 3 and 6d per week disability pension which he drew for duration of his life.

Attended Buckingham Palace Garden Party for last survivors of Boer War in 1960’s.

Any information whatsoever would be greatly appreciated, thank you very much.

The Palmer roll shows one "Clarke GG 20966 Pte., severely wounded Klienfontein 24101901, 5 Imperial Yeomanry". Note the extra "e". The SAFF Casualty roll for 7/1901-12/1901 has the 5th Bn., IY as being comprised of several numbered Companies; including 16th Coy (Worcester) and confirms the Palmer roll so this sounds like your GF. I would estimate that his clasp entitlement would have been CC/OFS/Tvaal/01/02(?). Others on this site are better placed to give you info re his personal enlistment papers - however, the above may help a little. Please keep all of the documentation together re his service!

IL.

Hello Goretti

The Register confirms the casualty and medal entitlement details given by IL - he served in the 16th (Worcestershire) Company.

There are service papers on FindmyPast.co.uk which indicate that he has a pension file (PIN71) at the National Archives Kew. These are not digitised, you will need to go yourself, find a friend or hire a researcher.

Goretti,

The PIN files are usually quite details so they are worth retrieving from the NA.

Please let us know what you find.

Best wishes

Hi Linney,SWB & David,
Thank you ever so much for all this information, I really appreciate it so much.
Please bear with me a little as I´m new to all this and honestly know little or nothing about this type of records, so if you don´t mind me asking which of these records can be assessed on line and which ones can only be acquired at the Archives in Kew?
As I live in Spain a personal visit to the Archives is out of the question but I have a new found cousin near Birmingham who might be happy to visit Kew but before I ask him I would like to do my homework first and know where I´m going.
Once again, thank you so much for all your help and kindness. No doubt this site has been a fabulous discovery!

Kindest regards,

Maria
