Mounting a 4.7-inch gun, landed from H.M.S. Terrible, onto one of Captain Percy Scott's improvised carriages on the quayside at Durban. Probably taken on 8th November 1899.
Photographs by J.E. Middlebrook, Durban.

A RARE INERT BOER WAR PERIOD ORDNANCE BL 5-INCH HOWITZER SHELL,

I'd be intrigued to know how this shell was intact enough to reconstruct, and what the fuze was - star shell perhaps? or a dud?
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

I recently acquired this superb lantern slide, used by war correspondent René Bull (of "Black and White" magazine) during his lecture tours after returning from South Africa.
It shows one of H.M.S. Terrible's 4.7-inch Naval Guns being hauled into position during the battle of Colenso.

Due to a severe bout of malarial fever, René Bull was forced to return from the seat of war in early April 1900. Within two weeks of landing at Kingstown, Ireland, he embarked upon an extensive lecture tour of the British Isles, his first venue being the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin (on 23rd April). Reports indicate that his lecture included 200 lantern slides.
It is interesting to note that the studio that mounted the slides, T. Mason of 5 Dame Street, was just eight minutes' walk from the Gaiety.

Below are photographs of the bases of two 4.7-inch shell cases.
The first, fired by the Natal Naval Volunteers (attached to the Naval Brigade) during the Battle of Spion Kop, is inscribed "ONE OF THE / Lyddite shell Cylinders / FIRED AT SPION KOP, on the 24th Jan / 1900 / by the / NATAL NAVAL VOLUNTEERS / WITH THE / Naval Brigade".
The second is inscribed on its side "4.7 / H.M.S. DORIS / ZWARTS KOP / KRUGERSDORP / SEPR 1900".
I have annotated the latter example, indicating the meaning of the various headstamps.

Hi, Does anyone know if any 4.7 inch guns from the Boer War still exist?
