It has long been a point of confusion to me as to what helmet insignia were worn during the ABW period by British and colonial forces.
Slouch cap badges have been discussed at length and there seems to be plenty of clarity there but these were worn mainly by mounted units.
Information on helmets on the other hand seems to be more obscure.

Is anyone able to expand on this subject?

Hello Iain,
In the British Army, the infantry in particular wore a cloth helmet flash, they carried their field service caps with badges as well, but, the flash was depending on regt, often an embroidered title, much like a shoulder title, attached to a square or diamond shaped piece of material, actually quite rare things, people don't understand what they are!
The Canadians had that lovely big brass maple leaf on theirs did they not?
Regards again Frank

Hi Frank,

it looks like its just you and me today,

From photos, I could see there was no longer a helmet plate worn to the front of the helmet and there was insignia on the side though not clear.
Do you happen to know what the SA colonial Infantry would have worn?

regards, Iain

Hello Iain,
Which regt/corps are you referring to?

Hello Iain.....

I agree with Frank in most cases they were worn on the side of the helmet and the South African units mostly wore the slouch hat with the badge also on the upturned side.....

Hi Mike,

nice badges! :)

Would SA infantry units have also worn a slouch hat? I am aware that the mounted units did.
