TPR C.D. WALES. INTELL : CORPS

Tucked away in WO100/301 between the Field Intelligence Department and the Intelligence Department is a small roll to :

Major Genl Elliot's Divisional Intelligence Corps.

This small unit, commanded by Major F.S. Tatham, consists of just 18 names. Of these,
13 medals were issued
5 being issued off other rolls, (Major F.S. Tatham had his medal issued off the Natal Volunteer Staff)
6 were returned,
leaving a balance of just 7 medals to the Intelligence Corps.

Conway Durrant Wales was born on the farm Klein Waterval, Natal, on 21st September 1879. His father, retired maritime Captain James Melville Wales (1855 - 1922) had pegged out the farm Klein Waterval and established a trading post. This would become the town of Bergville in 1897.

The corps would serve as part of Maj-Gen Elliot's sweep through the North Eastern Free State in late 1901.

It is interesting to note all the members have the rank of Trooper, unlike the normal Guide, Scout etc found on the FID roll.

Conway Durrant Wales died in Port Shepstone 16th September 1966 at the age of 86. He was single and a retired Civil Servant.

Another anomaly in the same vein as Crypt's post

From City Coins #18, c April 1973. Reserve R25

QSA (2) OFS, Johannesburg (Mr. K.B. Gloog, Intelligence Dept:)

The write-up says 'An interesting medal as those named to Intelligence Dept, (rather than F.I.O.) are rare. The rank "Mister" to a member of this unit is unusual. The recipient was most probably a farmer recruited for his special knowledge of his local territory.'
