Steve,

Thank you for posting his full biography and pictures.

I have not noticed that abbreviation for Kitchener's Horse in the past. The naming looks fine to me and the colon is used elsewhere to show shortened names. His medal was issued on 21 April 1903 so it is possibly a very slightly later batch?

I had a look for the house online but was not successful, too many other 'avenues' in Doncaster!

Best wishes
David

Bearing in mind 3579 Tpr WH Morris being transferred from Kitchener's Horse to Rimington's Guides on 21st April 1900, I took a browse through numerous pages of the Medal Rolls for KH and uncovered an interesting phenomenon.

The following men were all transferred from KH to RG on 27th April 1900:

3569 Tpr. A. E. Inman.
3578 Tpr. L. Price.
3582 Tpr. H. F. Woods.
3583 Tpr. E. Langbridge.
3585 Tpr. R. B. Dunham
3586 Tpr. T. S. Harris.

There is no detail of their medals being issued at the later date as found with 3579 Morris.

The interesting pattern which strikes me right away is the numbering is so close for these transferred individuals. Please bear in mind that I haven't searched ALL of the Medal Rolls.....yet!

Is it possible that a batch of recruits to KH could have been seconded to Rimington's/Damant's in order to bolster Rimington's? Perhaps the men transferred had little choice but to do as ordered.
One would assume that to be taken on the strength of KH, they would possess much of the skillset required by their new unit.

I also came across the entry for 3570 Squadron Sergeant Major Moore if Kitchener's Horse, whose regimental number would fall between the above listed.
A further consideration would surely be that KH would have been reluctant to release senior NCOs?

I would very much welcome any thoughts or comments on the above.

Cheers Steve

Sorry I am a bit late to the conversation, but I would like to point you to an obituary in the Shetland Toes of 1 Dec, 1900:

There is more information in a letter home by the Rev Norn Bennett, who wrote: was graphically described by Rev Norman Bennett, who wrote home to tell of his adventures. He said he was riding with De Lisle near Heilbron when scouts came racing in to say one of their number had been shot. Bennett said he went to scene to find Mitchell “shot through the brain, with blood coming from his mouth”, and he helped bury him at the spot he died. The farmhouse nearby was immediately burned, and Bennett described “it was pitiful to see the woman and her children there sobbing there with all the household furniture they could rescue piled in the yard and while the place they called ‘home’ was given to the raging flames.”

I have added some information regrading Tpr W Mitchell, but being inept at submitting posts, it is further down the thread (pg 12). Regards, Mark
