I have been notified of a split group to a Q Battery Corporal Collar Maker.

BS3350 GUNNER H.W. DUKE, Q BATTERY, ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY.
Queen's South Africa Medal, 2 clasps, Relief of Kimberley, Orange Free State,
officially impressed (32278 Gunner H.W. Duke, Q Battery, Royal Horse
Artillery). Extremely Fine.

Gunner Duke died of enteric fever at Bloemfontein, 23rd May 1900, 53 days
after the famous action at Sannah’s Post fought by Q Battery and one gun from
U Battery, Royal Horse Artillery, on 31/3/1900.

Medal accompanied by 4 pages of photocopied service papers, photocopy of
original medal roll extract (confirming medal and clasps), and page from
published Boer War Casualty Roll.

Herbert William Duke, born in the parish of Bengeo, near the town of
Hertford, Hertfordshire, enlisted into the Royal Artillery at London on
19/12/1898. At the time of enlistment Duke was 18 years and 1 month old,
gave his trade as that of engineer, and confirmed that he had been apprenticed
for the previous two years to the firm of M & HJ Rogers in Watford. After
training Duke was posted for service with P Battery with the rank of Gunner
on 24/3/1899, and subsequently posted for service with Q Battery, 27/11/1899.
Duke was still serving with Q Battery when he died of enteric fever at
Bloemfontein on 23/5/1900. Service papers give next of kin as his father,
William Duke, Stanstead Abbots, Ware, Hertfordshire.

From yesterday's DNW auction.

QSA (3) Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Transvaal (73036 Dr. J. W. Booth Q. Bty. R.H.A.) attempted erasure of name but just about discernible, with number re-engraved, polished, otherwise nearly very fine.

73036 Driver J. W. Booth served in “A” Sub-Division, “Q” Battery, Royal Horse Artillery during the Battle of Sannah’s Post on 31 March 1900.

Reported missing, Booth was subsequently invalided on 25 July 1900.

Sold for a hammer price of £600. Totals (inc VAT on the commission for the UK only): £773. R15,300. Au$1,300. Can$1,300. US$1,000

Army LS&GC EdVII (56221 Gnr: H. Birks. R.F.A.)

Henry Birks was born at Newport, Shropshire, and attested for the Royal Artillery at Walsall on 13 August 1886, aged 19 years 1 month, a fitter by trade. He served in South Africa from 24 October 1899 and is shown on the roll of “Q” Battery R.H.A. for his medal and first five clasps, and on the roll of “M”Battery R.H.A. for the South Africa 1901 clasp. He was granted the LS&GC medal on 20 November 1905, and was discharged at Sheffield on 28 July 1906.

When time allows, I would like to come back to that list from The Times (14 January 1902) and investigate how many men of Q Battery were likely to have been present at Koorn Spruit. My feeling is that the list in The Times is incomplete.
