This man joined Q Battery after Korn Spruit. His transfer in the week after may have been to strengthen the battery.

William Henry Boyce was born in Bedford and attested for the Royal Artillery at Newcastle-on-Tyne on 4 November 1885. He served overseas in India from October 1886 to November 1890, and in South Africa with U Battery RHA from 21 December 1899, where he transferred to Q Battery on 7 April 1900, for the remainder of the war in South Africa. He was discharged from Q Battery ‘medically unfit’ on 2 March 1912, having been awarded the LS&GC medal on 1 July 1910, and the 1911 Coronation medal.

David,

I would agree with you, I have had a similar discussion with Meurig over on the dark side. My feeling is the only real way to find out would be to go to source documents in an attempt to tie down who was and wasn't there.

I wonder if anyone has seen one of these -

On returning to Southampton, Colonel Phipps Hornby presented silver "Q" scarf pins to the officers:

Major G. HUMPHREYS
Lieutenant E.R. BURNE
Lieutenant R.W. St. L'GETHIN
Lieutenant E.W. FURSE

While the 85 OR's received briar pipes "with the letter 'Q' on the bowl in silver".

These were distributed on Southampton Quay on 30 Dec 1901.

It seems the only distinguishing mark was the "Q", so unless one of these turns up with a group, it is unlikely that any extant examples will be recognised for what they are.

Very interesting post. I for 1 would be delighted to see let alone have the opportunity to own 1 of these pipes. I suppose that these pipes may now come in a variety of changes/engraving to the originals presented. It was not until I joined saw a post somewhere that I found that collecting Boer pipes "were a thing".
