Hi Stefan,

Please don’t shoot the messenger but those medals, from the photos you showed, were not as awarded.

They appear renamed, the Star is engraved, and named, in a style that is not official.

According to Fold3 the name and regimental numbers do not align; perhaps excluding the Mercantile Medal.

There may be an interesting back story to the medals as to why they were self awarded; keep researching as it may be interesting what you discover.

Regards,
Shaun

Thanks Shaun,

I'm always aiming for the correct facts, so I'm thankful for all help I can get :-)

"Fold3" - do you mean the WO 100/237-3?

I've tried to get hold of the seller through the Auction house and I'm awaiting some sort of response.

Cheers,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

Fold3 is one of the paid subscription services used to download military records.

There are a number of reasons why medals get renamed; the one we all fear the most is the one to deceive the collector; I don’t believe this is the case; it looks like he genuinely wanted medals in his name (rightly or wrongly) and the back story may be very interesting indeed.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Regards,
Shaun

I remember a friend and fellow Swede asking for opinions/impressions on these medals and the overwhelming consensus was that some, if not all, were renamed. He was advised to steer clear of them. Still a nice thing to have if you didn't part with too much cash.

Thanks Rory,

I like all your input. Good to have as much knowledge as possible if I will continue collecting British medals :-)

I bought them this month (for about 450 GBP):
auctionet.com/sv/3948693-medaljsamling-m...onterade-pa-gemensam

Except the QSA where one can see the previously impressed letters and it also differs in diameter, the other round medals are holding their diameter and I can't see any other letters.

From the medal card - is the WW1 1914-1918 medal the "British medal issued"?

Regards,
Stefan

The Medal Card you provided is in respect of both the Mercantile Marine Medal and the British War Medal that was awarded to him Stefan. You have them both in your group. He was probably not entitled to the 1914-15 Star which is why he had one named up to him. Likewise, it is probable that he was not awarded the Victory Medal which is, anyway, not with the group you bought.

Apropos the Brabant's Horse QSA which is renamed - I don't remember seeing the rim of this medal but my friend did say it was renamed. There was a J P Anderson who served in Brabant's with no. 4062. What no. appears on your QSA medal?
