Sub-Conductor Samuel Tingey was born in 1863 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, and enlisted for service in the Royal Artillery on 13 January 1883, at the age of 19. He transferred to the Army Ordnance Corps in April 1900, and served during the Boer War in South Africa. He retired on 1 April 1905 with 20 years and 80 days of service, and was awarded a L.S.&.G.C. medal. After retirement he emigrated with his family to Australia, and on 20 August 1915 he re-enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force and was appointed W.O. 1st Class, serving at Liverpool, New South Wales, on Staff. He received the Commonwealth of Australia M.S.M. (Commonwealth Gazette: No. 109, 25 July 1918) for his service in the Great War, and was discharged on 24 May 1920.

He died on 12 September 1947.

Sold with original commission document as Armourer Quarter-Master Sergeant (Warrant Officer Class II), Discharge and Character Certificates, two identity discs (1st D.G.), and a large group photograph.

John Henry Bird was born in 1879 and enlisted at Birmingham on 27 November 1899, a gun finisher by trade. He was discharged at Hilsea on 26 November 1922, his Discharge Certificate confirming all medals and clasps with the exception of the two date clasps on his QSA. His medal index card also shows additional entitlement to the Sudan Medal 1910 with clasps for ‘Darfur 1916’ and ‘Fasher’ - a remarkable combination of medals and clasps. His character was described thus: ‘...is a very good Gun Smith - a thoroughly good man, very reliable, quick & intelligent. Has always given entire satisfaction - good powers of supervision. Trade before enlistment, Gun Finisher.’

The supplementary roll WO100/233p133 confirm the two date clasps and says he served with the 1st Royal Irish Rifles.

Oliver Caton Sherwood was appointed Lieutenant in the West India Regiment on 23 August 1884; Captain, 19 July 1893; Major, 20 January 1898; Lieutenant-Colonel, 29 November 1900. He served with the expedition to Ashanti under Sir Francis Scott in 1895 in the Ordnance Store Department (granted the higher rate of pay, Star).

Served in the South African war 1899-1900, appointed to act in a superior departmental rank from 5 January 1900 (despatches LG 10 September 1901; Brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel; Queen’s medal with 2 clasps).

Served with the BEF in France and Flanders from 17 August 1914, attached 3rd Echelon, General Headquarters (1914 Star - clasp not confirmed).
